The Western papacy claimed universal jurisdiction over all Christendom, aiming to supervise governance, appoint bishops, and influence liturgical and doctrinal practices in Eastern Christian communities. The Byzantine Church, by contrast, insisted on autocephaly under the Patriarch of Constantinople and governance through its own synods and imperial oversight.
